Your friend is trying to learn about how to kill bacteria. She reads the preservatives such as citric acid are added to foods be

cause the acidic environment kills bacteria by denaturing the proteins. She thinks this sounds like a lot of scientific jargon and asks you what it means. How can you explain it in simpler terms?
A. Denaturing their proteins means that the proteins in bacteria are converted into carbohydrates.
B. The acid causes the cells to swell and burst open, also known as denaturation.
C. Denaturing means that the proteins of the bacteria lose their structure and can't function, so the bacteria die.

Answer:

C. Denaturing means that the proteins of the bacteria lose their structure and can't function, so the bacteria die.

Explanation:

Denaturing is a term used to describe the loss or change of the structural shape and form of protein as a result of external influences such as heat, inorganic salts, exposure to bases or acids, and polarity of solvents. When protein become denatured, they lose their structure or shape, and therefore lose their functionality.

Bacteria contain proteins, and when exposed to acidic environment, their protein becomes denatured. As a result of this, various functions ceases in the bacteria leading to death.

Hi, how are you? Could someone help me with this? I would very much appreciate it.
oksian1 [2.3K]

Answer:

No, not really. Over time, organisms have grown much more complex. Photosynthesis happened around 3.4 billion years ago and respiration around 2 billion years ago. These all serve as a testimony to the fact that organisms are in fact growing more complex. We have seen photoautotrophs arise, from the simpler chemoautotrophs, and they now in fact dominate the array of producers! Organisms don't only do fermentation now; they can also do anaerobic respiration and aerobic respiration too! Thus, current life forms are a lot more different today than 3.8 billion years ago.

A young child runs a fever of 40 °c for 24 hours. explain what effect this may have on his digestion
Lunna [17]

Since the temperature is above 37 degrees, the child’s digestive system will begin to slow down as the enzyme begins to denature because both the internal temperature and the external body heat influence digestive processes. The effect upon the system of the temperature of food and drink is also a matter of significant consideration.
