Well their firing caused what some people thought was a civil war.  It was really just southerners fighting to keep slaves. The north hadnt taken all their talk of secession seriously and had decided to keep pressing the south until  they finally formed the confederate states of america. The effect was that the southerners were forced to fight the northern invaders and the black regiments. It was a civil war that the north won because the majority of the population and reources and was under their control. Lee couldnt have fresh army troops but washington did and after every attack got new fresh troops to get his army going
