The largest class in most early civilizations was the peasant class. These people were usually concerned with agriculture, and therefore, grew the food that fed the city. This was a very important task as communities were able to grow and develop only when surplus food was available. As agriculture became more efficient and systematic, this was increasingly easier to achieve.
