Since this is a right triangle, you can utilize the Pythagorean Theorem.

a^2+b^2=c^2

In THIS scenario, your hypotenuse and one of your legs are given. Therefore,

a=?
b=12
c=13

Now, substitute those values into the Pythagorean theorem and simply solve for "a"

a^2+b^2=c^2
a^2+(12)^2=(13)^2
a^2+(144)=(169)
a^2=(169)-(144)

a^2=25
\sqrt{a^2}= \sqrt{25}
a=+5, a=-5

Remember that you cannot have a negative measure. You cannot have a length measure -5 units. Therefore, we can ONLY take the positive value.
a=5

Thank you and I hope this helped.

Using the Pythagorean Theorem, 169-144 = 25
The square root of 25 is 5 so x= 5
Hope this helps!

Write a function rule that gives the total cost c(p) of pounds of sugar if each pound cost $.59
aliina [53]
Answer: c(p) = 0.59*p

All we do is multiply the price per pound (0.59) by the number of pounds (p). In this case, we don't know how many pounds there are. So we leave p as is. If for instance, we had 10 pounds, then we'd replace p with 10. The variable is simply a placeholder for the unknown number.

A circle has a diameter with endpoint at 5 + 18i and -3 + 2i. What is the center of the circle?
Alexus [3.1K]
So there is a real and imaginary axis
the midopint is just the average of them
average between the reals is (5-3)/2=2/2=1
average between imaginaries is (18i+2i)/2=20i/2=10i

center is 1+10i
