I do believe it's the "eardrum" you need to protect most, because if you don't, and it is injured or something, then you will be deaf in whatever ear it happens on. It is a very serious injury, and some people say it could cause death, but i wouldn't go as far as to believe that.

The other person was right on both guesses.. Growing pains or sleeping/resting on it incorrectly.

It could also be caused by overworking it.

All three of those options can lead to cramping or what feels like an ache near the joint (unless it`s not at a joint, then it`s probably just a little muscle cramp).
