After the Mexican-American War, the United States gained the following territories: 1) California 2) Arizona 3) New Mexico 4) Utah
Most of these territories were affected by the Compromise of 1850. California became a free state in this compromise. Utah and New Mexico implemented the policy of popular sovereignty, allowing citizens to vote on whether or not they want the institution of slavery.
