Boys and girls are raised differently to adopt certain behavior that are said to be appropriate for that gender. This ranges from behavior,personality traits and attitudes which are encouraged for each gender.

This also used to be common when children go to school teachers had different expectations for each gender such as teachers giving boys the more challenging tasks when girls are given a bit less demanding task.
