A genetic mutation occurs when there is a permanent change in the nucleotide sequence of the DNA. The error falls in to 3 main groups; Deletion, substitution, or an addition of base pairs. The main reason why mutations are fatal are because of the rapid cell development that can cause cancer.

During replication, a genetic mutation can occur due to;

• The disappearance of the nucleotide base.

• Addition of any nucleotide in a DNA sequence.

• Substitution of nucleotide base pair.

Further Explanation:

Genetic mutation can develop due to change in a particle sequence of the DNA. It can affect a single sequence or can affect a large sequence of DNA. Genetic mutation can be of two types:

• Somatic mutation: These are the mutation that can develop during the life span of an individual. They are not like hereditary. They can develop due to UV-rays.

• Hereditary mutation: These are the mutation that can pass from parents to offspring. They are also referred to as a germline mutation. They pass through the egg or sperm cell.

During the process of replication, genetic mutation mainly develops due to:

• Deletion: In this, disappearance or deletion of a specific nucleotide can occur and develop a mutation in the DNA. This is an example of a point mutation.

• Duplication: In this, duplication of a particular base pair occurs.

• Insertion: In this, the addition of a specific nucleotide base or nitrogenous base can occur.

• Substitution: In this, the normal base pair is substituted by a different base pair.
