The Dred Scott decision was a ruling by the US Supreme Court that enslaved people could not be American citizens and therefore could not sue in Federal Court. Dred Scott was a slave who wanted to sue for his freedom. It was denied by the Supreme Court.

Question: Why were Northerners upset about the Dred Scott decision?

Answer: It reinforced the Fugitive Slave Act.
