In "The £1,000,000 Bank-Note," why did Mark Twain most likely create the character Henry Adams as an American living in England?
ikadub [295]
Twain likely made Henry Adams an American in England to show how far removed he was from what was viewed as proper English society. As an American he would be considered a backwards outsider that could not possibly fit in. That all changes when he receives the bank-note and then can afford to buy his way into the English society.

There were possibly a few track men out there who knew the race horse as well as Edna, but there was certainly none who knew it
Varvara68 [4.7K]

Edna’s knowledge of the track is legitimate.

The passage describes Edna as being incredibly knowledgeable of the track. It says, "there was certainly none who knew it better." This quote shows that the speaker regards her as an expert in the race horse. Even though it says that "she sat between her two companions as one having authority to speak", we don't actually know how her peers view her knowledge. We also don't know Edna's feelings about her friends, and since there is no real dialogue from Edna we do not know if she is being boastful.
