Answer:

D. About ten percent of the energy at one trophic level is passed to the next trophic level

Explanation:

In an ecosystem, the amount of energy decreases at each trophic level. Precisely, the energy transfer from lower trophic level ot high trophic level is calculate to be 10% of the previous level. Rest of the energy is just wasted through metabolic activities (e.g. heat). For example, if a grassland ecosystem has total energy of 10,000 Kcal, only 1000 Kcal would be transferred to the primary consumers, and then 100 Kcal to secondary consumers, and finally 10 Kcal to tertiary consumers. See figure for better understanding.

First option is incorrect because energy flow in an ecosystem is unidirectional. Option B and C are incorrect because energy flow is not dependent on specific animal/plant species but rather at trophic levels.

What are index fossils used to determine?
dlinn [17]

Answer:

Index fossil that is also known as indicator fossil is used to determine the age of the layers of the rocks. It says that the new layer of sedimentary rocks lie over the old layer.

The deeper we go, the older the rocks we will find. Index fossil of animals that lived or survived only for a short period of time are very useful. An example of index fossil can be Ammonites that were found in Mesozoic era that was about 25-35 million years ago.

In 1953, Stanley Miller and Harold Urey built a model of Earth's early
ExtremeBDS [4]

Answer: C. Miller and Urey showed that inorganic compounds could combine to form the building blocks of living cells.

Explanation:

The Miller and Urey were the two scientists who created the atmospheric conditions that were expected to be present on primitive earth. They demonstrated that several organic compounds have been formed spontaneously from the inorganic compounds like water, ammonia, methane and others.

The exposure of mixture of inorganic compounds by the lightening lead to the formation of organic molecules like amino acids which are the building blocks of life. This was similar to the penetration of earth atmosphere by UV radiation producing the organic compounds from inorganic molecules.

What is the TECTONIC CYCLE? Briefly summarize it.
igomit [66]
In simple terms, heavier plates get melted in Mantle, become lighter in form of lava and create new plates. As we have a re-cycle or the convection currents, there are cycles in lithosphere.
There is continuous push and pull happening on and below the Earth. When a plate is subducting on one end, there has to be some reaction on the other end, right?
Ridge is developed on the other side, where the same material which has been melted on the subduction side helps to fill the gap at ridge side. Since the material is just transfered from heavy to light, and reused in that cell, it is called a cycle.
