Plant cells need energy to stay alive. In both plants and humans we need glucose (a sugar) to make energy. 
I'll simplify the process for you.

Glucose + Oxygen  -->  Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy

The reaction requires energy (made through photosynthesis) that's made from light energy from the sun in order to convert Glucose & water to CO2+ water+ energy
