They wanted to convert Africans to Christianity

Africa had its own set of religions which were based around the tradition of the people in the land. Christian missionaries went there because they believed that it was their duty to convert Africans to Christianity, like they believed it was so in the Americas. Sometimes they were successful, sometimes not.
