Indonesia. Almost immediately after the Japanese were defeated, on August 17, 1945, Sukarno and Mohammed Hatta declared Indonesia's independence from Sukarno's home in Jakarta. They had effectively been forced to make the declaration after being kidnapped by military youth groups.

These expeditions allowed the Russian parties to observe large stretches of uncolonized land. This led to the conclusion that a Russian settlement could be established in California.
