Walker Percy in his book, <em>Lost in the Cosmos</em> relates a scene that is common in most movies. A case in a movie where a man returns to his home and cannot recognize his wife again but is taken to bed by her was one of the examples cited by Percy. He noted that the person watching the movie is excited not because the man has amnesia, but because all his past troubles have been forgotten.

This feeling, Percy noted is something that appeals to people in general. The desire to escape from themselves and forget all of their struggles.
