It was one part of the triangular trade in which goods such as Knives, guns, and ammunition were taken from Europe to Africa. From Africa, Slaves were purchases and were taken to the Americas and West Indies to work on plantations. From plantations, raw materials like the Sugar, rice, tobacco, Indigo, and Cotton were taken back to Europe. From 1518 till the mid of 19th century millions of slaves including children and women were sent to the Americas and Caribbean. The ships on which they were transported were mostly overcrowded and were manned by Great Britain, the Netherlands and Portugal.
