I think the best similarities of the two of them is that both writers wrote about things and events that are going on in their country and the comparison of them is that American writer wrote about war, racism and slavery, and politics in a current time while European writer are all about religions. I'm pretty sure the reason your teacher said "no" is because trans fat is CURRENTLY being banned. It's not yet removed entirely, but the laws are in place for them to be.
(So I've heard from people. I'm not sure if this is accurate, but you could probably find out with a quick google search).
