In the year 2500, five male space colonists and five female space colonists (all unrelated to each other) settle on an uninhabit

ed Earthlike planet in the Andromeda galaxy. The colonists and their offspring randomly mate for generations. All 10 of the original colonists had free earlobes, and 2 were heterozygous for that trait. The allele for free earlobes is dominant to the allele for attached earlobes.
If four of the original colonists died before they produced offspring, the ratios of genotypes could be quite different in the subsequent generations. This is an example of?

Answer:

The correct answer is genetic drift.

Explanation:

The phenomenon of changing the frequency of an allele in a specific population with time is known as genetic drift. The mentioned gene variation or the modification in the frequency of the allele is required to take place abruptly so that the phenomenon of genetic drift can take place. The environmental factors do not play an essential role in the phenomenon of genetic drift to take place.

The process of genetic drift occurs generally due to random sampling of organisms, it illustrates the random change in the number of gene variants within a population. When the existence of the different forms of a gene, that is, alleles, enhances or reduces by chance with time within a population, the phenomenon of genetic drift occurs. Thus, the mentioned case is an illustration of genetic drift.

What do we call the process where part of the DNA is saved during replication?
Nataly_w [17]

Answer:

The process where part of the DNA is saved during replication is known as semi conservative replication.

Explanation:

During cell division, a cell must first replicate its DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid).  When a cell divides into daughter cells , the DNA of the parent cell must be copied because DNA contains the genetic material of an organism. DNA replication is the process in which DNA is copied  during the cell  division cycle.  During replication, the complementary strands of the original double helix DNA are separated and one of the two strands in the original molecule is saved in the new DNA molecule. Thus the new DNA molecule is made of an original strand and a newly synthesized strand. So the DNA replication is known as semi conservative replication. Each strand of the original DNA molecule is referred as the template strand because it provides information for the production of newly synthesized strand. It takes place inside the nucleus of a cell during the s stage  of the cell cycle. During replication, helicase enzyme breaks the hydrogen bonds between the complementary bases (Adenine with Thymine, Cytosine with Guanine) and unwinds the double helix of DNA. The two separated strands create a Y-shaped replication fork and act as templates for the synthesis of new strands of DNA. Enzymes known as DNA polymerases create the new strands.

In the pedigree that is shown, which represents Irene's allele combination?
Greeley [361]

The red-green color blindness is a recessive X-linked trait. The females are not affected unless both the X chromosomes have the affected allele. Mostly, the females are the carriers, and the males are affected as they have only one X chromosome. In the given pedigree, the father of Irene have the normal allele, while her mother is a carrier. However, Irene is neither a carrier nor affected. This means that she carries normal alleles on both X chromosomes. Hence, her allele combination is X^{H} X^{H} .
