George Washington, one of the founding fathers during the American Revolutionary War, was commander in chief of the Continental Army and served two terms as the first U.S. president. Washington was raised in colonial Virginia, the son of a prosperous planter. He worked as a surveyor then fought in the French and Indian War, as a young man.

He led the colonial forces to victory over the British, during the American Revolution, and from there became a national hero. In 1787, he was elected president of the convention that wrote the first ever U.S. Constitution. Washington became America’s first president two years later. He soon handed down a legacy of strength, integrity and national purpose. Making him start realizing that the way he handled the job would impact the future on how future presidents approached the position.

He died at his Virginia plantation, not more than three years after leaving the White House, at Mount Vernon, at age 67.
