The number of protons in a given atom's nucleus is called its atomic number, and it is these atomic numbers by which the elements on the periodic table are classified. For example, a hydrogen atom has one proton in its nucleus and is therefore called number one on the periodic table.

Draw the Lewis structure for H2SO4 (H is bonded to O). Draw the molecule by placing atoms on the grid and connecting them with b
Pavel [41]

Answer:

Lewis structure in the attached image.

Explanation:

To draw the Lewis structure of H₂SO₄, we need to consider the octet rule: atoms gain, lose or share electrons to have 8 electrons in their valence shell. Hydrogen is an exception because its valence shell is complete with 2 electrons (duet). H, S and O are nonmetals, so they form covalent bonds to complete their valence shell, that is, they share pairs of electrons.

  • S has 6 valence electrons, so it has to share 2 pairs of electrons to reach the octet.
  • O has 6 valence electrons, so it has to share 2 pairs of electrons to reach the octet.
  • H has 1 valence electron, so it has to share 1 pair of electrons to reach the duet.

In the attached image is the resulting Lewis structure.

The electrolysis of molten alcl3 for 3.25 hr with an electrical current of 15.0 a produces ________ g of aluminum metal.
Snowcat [4.5K]
Based on Faraday's 1st law of electrolysis,
total electric current passed in AlCl3 = I = Q X T
where Q = electric charge, T = time (in seconds)
Given, Q = 15 A, T = 3.5 h = 3.5 X 60 X 60 s = 12600 s
∴ I = 15 X 12600 = 189000 C

Now, based on Faraday's 2nd law of electrolysis we have,
W = ZIT
where, W= weight of electrolyte deposited/evolved at any electrode
Z= electrochemical equivalent
T= time (s)
I = electric current
in present case, Electrochemical Equivalent of Al = \frac{26.98}{3} = 8.993 g and I = 189000 C
∴ W = 8.993 X 189000 X 12600 = 2.141X 10^{10} g
