a country might stay neutral in foreign affairs because they might have benefit from both of the countries for example: if a country has gets oil from one and gets rice from the other. both of the countries go to war the third country which benefits from the other country might need to pick a side, but the supplies are both important meaning they will chose to stay neutral and not get involved.
