They were given Medal of Honor for their achievement and were considered national heroes until 1996 when a dairy was found of explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd in which it was stated that they turned back about 150 miles away from the North Pole due to an oil leakage. Hence, the first flight achievement was awarded to Umberto Nobile, Lincoln Ellsworth, and Roald Amundsen who made on May 12, 1926.
