The rise of nationalism was one of the most important political phenomena of the 20th century. Nationalism is an ideology that is characterized by the promotion of the interests of a particular nation. Nationalism usually has as its goal self-determination.

In the 20th century, this ideology led to the independence of many nations. However, it also had a role in the rise of fascist governments such as those in Italy and Germany.

Harriet Tubman would throw pepper down to throw the dogs off of the scent of the slaves. The pepper would make the dogs sneeze and they would not be able to pick up the trail or scent. This would allow the slaves more time to get away from their pursuers.
