Which of the following statements regarding mercury is TRUE? Mercury is a mild toxin and produces no long lasting side effects.

Small fish such as anchovies and sardines contain the highest amounts of mercury and should be avoided. Mercury can poison the nervous system at high enough doses. Shark and swordfish are examples of two fish that contain little or no mercury and are therefore safe to consume in large quantities.

Answer:

The answers that are true are:

1) Small fish such as anchovies and sardines contain the highest amounts of mercury and should be avoided

2) Mercury can poison the nervous system at high enough doses.

Explanation:

Mercury has been found in fishes like anchovies, sharks, king mackerel, sardines and others and these are very harmful for consumption.

Studies have shown the link between high exposure to mercury and central nervous system changes and then damage. It acts by preventing neurons from reaching their site of action in infants brain, loss of cognitive functions, tremors, headaches and eventually death.

Scientific thinking: how can scientists assess the health risks of trans fats
Klio2033 [76]
Scientists can access the risks of trans fats by conducting an appropriate experiment which will show the effects of the fats on the human system.
This can be done by feeding known quantity of trans fats to rats over a specific period of time. During the period, the change in the rat weights will be measured on the daily basis and every other changes that is noted in the rats will be noted down. A control group of rats will be included in the experiment; these rats will be given normal rat feeds and not trans fats.
When the period of feeding is completed, the rats will be killed, all the organs in the rats such as liver, blood, brains, kidney, etc will be harvested and these organs will then be biochemically analysed in order to compare the changes in them with that of a normal rats.
Rats are usually used in biochemical research because their systems and that of human is comparable. Any negative effect of trans fats that is noted in the rats will also hold true for human beings.

Generally speaking, what effect does temperature have on the solubility of gases in liquids?
MrRa [10]

With the increase in temperature, solubility of gases in liquid decrease.

Option A

Explanation:

Gases are soluble in liquid but it's solubility depends on temperature and pressure. As the temperature increases, the solubility of gases decrease. It is because with the increase in temperature, the kinetic energy of both the molecules of gas and the solvent increase. This leads to increase in molecular vibration and this makes the gas molecules escape the solution.

This makes the gas solubility vs temperature graph have a hyperbolic curve. As the temperature increases the solubility decrease and vice versa.
