Se han originado de forma natural por un proceso de fosilización en anoxia (falta de oxígeno) ambiental: la materia orgánica no se ha degradado por microorganismos (que no pueden vivir), sino que permanece en forma de moléculas orgánicas más complejas, sólidas (carbón), líquidas (petróleo) o gas (gas natural). La energía de estas moléculas es la que se libera en utilizarlos como combustible.

Este proceso de millones de años es el que convierte los combustibles fósiles en una fuente de energía no renovable, ya que se consume mucho más rápido que no se genera.
