A stone is thrown horizontally from the top of a cliff and eventually hits the ground below. A second stone is dropped from rest

from the same cliff, falls through the same height, and also hits the ground below. Ignore air resistance. Discuss whether each of the following quantities is different or the same in the two cases; if there is a difference, describe the difference:
(a) displacement.
(b) speed just before impact with the ground, and
(c) time of flig

Answer and Explanation:

As per the question:

When the stone is thrown from the cliff top and hits the ground below eventually:

R = v_{o}\sqrt{\frac{2H}{g}}

where

v_{o} = initial velocity

H = height

g = acceleration due to gravity

R = horizontal Range

Now,

(a) Displacement of the stone is given by the horizontal range:

R = v_{o}\sqrt{\frac{2H}{g}}

where

v_{o} = initial velocity

H = height

g = acceleration due to gravity

R = horizontal Range

(b) Speed just prior to the impact is given by the third equation of motion:

v = \sqrt{v_{o}^{2} + 2gH}

where

v = final velocity

(c) Time of flight is given by the second eqn of motion where the initial velocity is considered to be 0 then:

H = v_{o}T + \frac{1}{2}gT^{2}

H = 0.T + \frac{1}{2}gT^{2}

T = \sqrt{\frac{2H}{g}

What are the two main types of energy?
djyliett [7]

Answer:

Fourth option

Explanation:

They're many different types of energy, from chemical and mechanical to heat and solar energy. But the two most basic types of energy are "kinetic and potential energy" or the fourth option. Kinetic energy is the energy an object has when it is in motion, while potential energy is the energy an object has when it's as rest. These two specific types of energies are the most basic and you can even convert them into many different types of energies, like heat or electrical energy.

Hope this helps.

You punt a ball straight up at 20 m/s. What is the balls hangtime
Natalija [7]

The hang time of the ball is 4.08 s

Explanation:

The ball is in free fall motion: this means that it is acted upon gravity only, so its acceleration is the acceleration of gravity,

a=g=-9.8 m/s^2

downward (the negative sign refers to the downward direction).

Since this is a uniformly accelerated motion, we can solve the problem by using the following suvat equation:

v=u+at

where

v is the final velocity

u is the initial velocity

a is the acceleration

t is the time

First we calculate the time it takes for the ball to reach the maximum height, where the velocity is zero:

v = 0

Substituting:

u = +20 m/s

a=-9.8 m/s^2

we find t

t=\frac{v-u}{a}=\frac{0-20}{-9.8}=2.04 s

The motion of the ball is symmetrical, so the total time of flight is just twice the time needed to reach the maximum height, therefore:

T=2t=2(2.04)=4.08 s

What is the potential energy of a 3 kilogram-ball that is on the ground?
Aleks [24]
The answer is 0
potential energy= mass• gravity (9.8m/s)• height.
Your mass 3kg. I believe your need to convert this to grams (3000g) and then multiply by 9.8. Since your height is 0 because the ball is on the ground then your potential energy is 0

What is the purpose of control group ?
kirill [66]
Control group in a scientific experiment is a group separated from the rest of the experiment, it is where the independent variable being tested cannot influence the results. It isolates the independent variable's effects on the experiment and can helps rule out alternative explanations of the experimental results.
