Explain Gynecomastia in males.
PolarNik [594]

Gynecomastia is an increase in the size of the mammary gland in men. The condition can occur in one or both breasts. It starts as a small mass under the nipple, which can be sensitive. One breast can be bigger than the other. Its cause is an imbalance between the stimulatory effects of estrogen (female sex hormones) and the inhibitory effects of androgens (male sex hormones) in the breast tissue, when the first ones increase, or the second ones descend.

Gynecomastia is a problem relatively common in the population, and there are three prevalence peaks throughout life:

Newborns: Between 60 and 90% of newborns have gynecomastia, produced by the passage of maternal estrogens through the placenta. It is a transient gynecomastia that disappears in about 2-3 weeks.

Puberty: Gynecomastia in puberty affects mainly young people aged between 10 and 14 years, and is due to the transient and physiological increase in estrogen that occurs at this age.

Elderly: Is due to an increase in fatty tissue with a greater peripheral aromatization ( a process that occurs in adipose tissue and that involves the conversion of androgens into estrogens), a decrease in the production of testosterone by the testes and the use of drugs.

How are eukaryotic cells different from prokaryotic cells?
avanturin [10]

Answer:

Prokaryotic cell:

Prokaryotic cell do not have the nucleus and their DNA is present in the cytoplasm. The membrane bound cell organelle are absent in the prokaryotic cells. The ribosome of prokaryotic cell is 70'S. Transcription and translation is coupled in prokaryotic cells.

Eukaryotic cells:

Eukaryotic cell have well defined nucleus and their DNA is present inside the nucleus. The membrane bound cell organelle are present in the eukaryotic cells. The ribosome of eukaryotic cell is 80'S. Transcription and translation is not coupled and takes place in separate compartments in eukaryotic cells.

6. A scientist measures the circumference of acorns in a population of oak trees
melisa1 [442]

Answer:

6. 2 cm

8. Greater than 2 cm and less than 2 cm

Explanation:

Complete Question

6. A scientist measures the circumference of acorns in a population of oak trees and discovers that the most common circumference is 2 cm. What would you expect the most common circumference(s) to be after 10 generations of stabilizing selection?

-2 cm

-Greater than 2 cm or less than 2 cm

-Greater than 2 cm and less than 2 cm

-Can't tell from the information given

8. Refer to question 6, but this time answer what you would expect after 10

generations of directional selection.

-2 cm

-Greater than 2 cm or less than 2 cm

-Greater than 2 cm and less than 2 cm

-Can't tell from the information given

Solution -

6. In an stabilizing selection, the average trait of a given population is favored over extreme values. Hence, it can be said that one specific trait is over presented in a given population. For example – uniform human birth weight, number of eggs a bird lay etc.

Here in this case if most common circumference is 2 cm , then the tree population will try to have this trait as a stabilizing trait.

Thus, option A is correct

8. In a  directional selection, the genetic variation decreases as per the environmental change. And hence the average trait will not be selected. Instead traits either higher or lower the average values will be preferred.

Thus, option C is correct
