When Helen jogs, every $20$ minutes she checks the total distance she traversed. One day, the first time she checked, Helen had

jogged a distance of $2.5$ miles, the second time she checked, she had jogged a total distance of $4.8$ miles, and the third and final time that she checked, Helen found out that she jogged a total distance of $6.8$ miles. What is the difference between her average speeds, in miles per hour, during the first $20$ minutes of jogging and the last $20$ minutes of jogging?

The difference between speeds, during the first 20 minutes and last 20 minutes, would be 4.3 miles. The key word here is difference which automatically tells us to subtract. In this case you would subtract 6.8 miles, the last 20 minutes, by 2.5 miles, the first 20 minutes. In the end, getting 4.3 miles. Hope this helps! :)

Three consecutive integers: Let the first be x. Then the second would be x+1 and the third would be x+2. The sum of these 3 consecutive integers would then be x + x+1 + x+2, or 3x + 3.

Unless you know what this sum is (numerically speaking), you cannot solve this problem for x.

Jill bikes 2/3 hour at 18 mph and then walks 2/5 hour at 5 mph. How much farther did she bike than walk?
Oksana_A [137]

Answer:

10

Step-by-step explanation:

When the equation says that Jill bikes 2/3 hour at 18 mph, it means that the amount of miles she biked is 2/3 of 18. 18 divided by 3 is 6. 6 times 2 is 12, so she biked 12 miles. If she walks 2/5 hour at 5 mph, then she walked 2 miles because 5 divided by 5 is 1 and 1 times 2 is two. The question is asking how much more she biked than walked, so 12-2=10.

1000 tickets were bought at a concert. the amount needed to buy a children’s ticket was $4.50 and the amount needed for an adult
Sholpan [36]

Answer:

The number of children's tickets bought was 300 and the number of adult tickets bought was 700

Step-by-step explanation:

Let

x ----> the number of children's tickets bought

y ----> the number of adult tickets bought

we know that

x+y=1,000

x=1,000-y -----> equation A

4.50x+8.50y=7,300 -----> equation B

Solve the system by substitution

substitute equation A in equation B

4.50(1,000-y)+8.50y=7,300

solve for x

4,500-4.50y+8.50y=7,300

4y=7,300-4,500

4y=2,800

y=700

Find the value of x

x=1,000-700=300

therefore

The number of children's tickets bought was 300 and the number of adult tickets bought was 700
