William Crookes

Crookes found that when he passed a high voltage through an evacuated glass tube, the glass at the at the anode end began to glow.

He designed the famous Maltese cross Crookes tube, in which the cross produced a shadow. This showed that the mysterious rays travelled in straight lines.  He also showed that the rays could be bent by a magnetic field.

Later researchers

At the time, atoms were the smallest particles known, and scientists thought they were indivisible. What carried the current was a mystery.

Crooke believed the “cathode rays” consisted electrically charged atoms. Others thought they were some new form of electromagnetic radiation.

J. J Thomson

They were all wrong.

J.J. Thomson extended Crookes’ work by making quantitative measurements on the particles in the rays.

By using electric and magnetic fields, he calculated their charge-to-mass (e/m) ratio and showed that their mass was 1/1800 times the mass of a hydrogen atom,

Therefore, these particles were not atoms. Thomson had discovered the first  subatomic particle, the electron, and this led to his famous “plum pudding “ model of the atom.
