Edgar Allan Poe was an American Romantic writer, alongside Hawthorne,
Herman Melville, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
But, even though his writings were was akin to his contemporaries and
characteristics of Romanticism, his works often bordered on what was later
called the Gothic genre (Dark Romanticism).
Poe is known for his affairs and his general love life. He craved love, likely because the deaths of three mother-like figures in his life. Poe strived for acceptance and love by many woman.
