Biology

Answer:

a) The mineral Quartz (silicon dioxide SiO2), is created by combining the elements silicon and oxygen.

b) Coal, from plant materials, and limestone (calcium carbonate CaCO3) created by corals and other sea creatures, are not minerals even though they are mined like many ores.

Explanation:

Quartz is a very hard mineral created by combining the elements silicon and oxygen. It is chemically stable and so weathers very slowly. The quartz crystal can be colored yellow, brown, black, milky white, rose, etc depending on the impurities in the rock at the time of formation. It is used in the production of optical instruments, various electrical devices, sandpaper, grinding tools, etc.

Coal is formed from the gradual accumulation of plant remains (peat) that are found in tropical wetlands. It is used as fuel for electric power generation, in blacksmithing purposes and to make coke.

Limestone is made up of skeletal fragments from marine organisms like corals, planktons, coralline algae, sponges, echinoderms, mollusks, foraminifera, etc. The shells of most of these organisms are made up of aragonite or calcite. When they die, the shells left behind are accumulated over millions of years and form limestone. It is used in the production of lime, used as a building material and filler in products like toothpaste or paints. It is also an essential component of Portland cement.

Oceans and other bodies of water warm up more slowly than air or land. Describe how the hydrogen bonds between water molecules c
Black_prince [1.1K]
Water is heated up when their molecules absorb energy and attain a higher speed. Most of the energy absorbed by water is initially used in disrupting the hydrogen bonds that water molecules make with themselves, thus limiting the amount of energy left to transfer into the kinetic motion of the water molecules themselves. This in turn causes water to heat up much slower.

sweet [91]

This indicated that Photosynthesis was occurring.

Photosynthesis- Green plants employ a process called photosynthesis to produce their own sustenance. Life on Earth depends on photosynthesis. Without it, there wouldn't be any green vegetation, and there wouldn't be any creatures either. Interactive. Sunlight, chlorophyll, water, and carbon dioxide gas are necessary for photosynthesis.

Chlorophyll- Chlorophyll is a pigment found in certain living creatures and all green plants. It is necessary for the process of photosynthesis, which turns light energy into chemical energy. The pigment chlorophyll is what gives plants their green color.

Pigment- A chemical that may be found in animal or plant tissue and gives off a distinctive color, such hemoglobin in red blood or chlorophyll in green plants.

List two modern organisms that have pentameral symmetry
Natasha2012 [34]

Pentameral symmetry is actually five-sided symmetry. This type of symmetry is found within the phylum Echinodermata.

One example of animal with pentameral symmetry is starfish which are similar in shape to a pentagram. Another example is sea urchin as an adult (its larvae has bilateral symmetry).

Pentameral symmetry is a type of radial symmetry – can be divided in several roughly identical pieces. Organisms with such a symmetry have no left or right sides, they have a top and a bottom surface, or a front and a back.

AysviL [449]

Answer:

This question lacks options, the options are;

A. Enlarged molecules

B. Macromolecules

C. Inorganic molecules

The answer is B

Explanation:

As mentioned in this question, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids are the basic biomolecules found in nature. They are all polymeric substances, hence, are made up of smaller units called monomers.

Asides from being biomolecules, these four molecules are also referred to as MACROMOLECULES based on their large size and complex nature. Macromolecules are molecules that are relatively large in size composing of an aggregate of monomer. Hence, these biomolecules are macromolecules.
