The significance was that these allowed goods to be transported much faster than by horse. Canals allowed for things to be imported and exported much more easily.

It also brought the Thirteenth Amendment which brought significance to the war, for now people were fighting to free slaves. Non-slave countries also received this amendment, especially England, which ended the threat of English support for the Confederacy. All in all, the Emancipation Proclamation was one of the most important statements ever issued in the United States.</span>
