In general, literacy is a simple word which explains someone who can read, write and communicate.

<u>Some indicators of literacy:</u>

1. Writing skills: A literate individual has the ability to write words correctly, which translate to having skills in spelling compared to someone who is illiterate. Illiterates struggle to write correctly because they lack the skill as they never learnt it.

2. Comprehension: Literates have the ability to understand terms. They learnt it, so they can easily understand.

3. Communication or narrative skills: Literates possess the skill to communicate effectively and also narrate events, topics and host of other things to other people. They have this confidence because they are aware and know what they are saying.

4. Use of words: Literates have great commands in the use of words. They know the meaning of words and use them with precision, that cannot be said of illiterates.

5. Knowledgeable: Literates are called so because they also posses the basic knowledge that distinguish them from illiterates.

6. Reading skills: Illiterates finds it difficult to read. This is one of the foremost indicators of literacy. A sign of literacy is the ability to read fluently.

7. Identification skills: Literates could identify text, letters, symbols, signs, and so many other things. They could distinguish text easily.

8. Interpretation: For those individual who are literate in sign language, they could interpret signs easily and could also explain to others.
