Koumbi Saleh traded primarily in trans-Saharan gold trade. Gold came from the Western Africa. This is were gold fields were abundant and the import of it was very rampant during the Arab conquest in the middle of the 7th century. The value of Gold was very high and it was used during the early days as trade or barter for other produce like spices and silk.
