assuming you want us to solve for x

remember that you can do anything to an equation as long as you do it to both sides

18x+20+x=10x-3

combine like terms

19x+20=10x-3

minus 10x from both sides

19x-10x+20=10x-10x-3

9x+20=0-3

9x+20=-3

minus 20 from both sides

9x+20-20=-3-20

9x+0=-23

9x=-23

divide both sides by 9

\frac{9x}{9}=\frac{-23}{9}

x(\frac{9}{9})=\frac{-23}{9}

x(1)=\frac{-23}{9}

x=\frac{-23}{9}

18x + 20 + x = 10x -3

Combine like terms

19x + 20 = 10x -3

Subtract 20 to both sides because whatever you do on one side you have to do it on the other side:

19x = 10x -23

Subtract 10x

9x = -23

Divide 9 to isolate x:

x = -23/9

Simplify to get a mixed number:

x = -2 5/9

Karen is investigating if age has any effect on political party preferences. What is the explanatory variable?
anastassius [24]

Using variable concepts, it is found that the explanatory variable is the age.

<h3>Explanatory and response variables:</h3>
  • The variables of an experiment are divided into explanatory and response.
  • The response variable is the one that is the focus of the study, that is, the one that can be changed.
  • The explanatory is the one that explains the reason of the change in the response variable.

In this problem, the <u>age can effect the political party preference</u>, hence:

  • The variable that is changed is the political party preference, hence it is the response variable.
  • The reason is the age, hence it is the explanatory variable.
