Life has the following major characteristics that define it;
- It responds to stimuli
- It reproduces
- It exhibits growth and development
- It has some order – has levels of organization
- They regulate their internal environment through homeostasis
These characteristics distinguish the living thing from non-living things.
Cnidarians have one body opening. There is no mouth or anus. Instead, food particles are drawn into the body by movement of water. Inside the body cavity are specialized cells called amoebocytes and collar cells that help digestand remove wastes. Cnidarians with the opening at the top have body plans called polyps, such as corals. Those with the opening underneath have a medusa body form, such as jellyfish.
The order that taxonomy is written is : Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.
A good mnemonic (without domain) is King Phillip Came Over For Good Spaghetti.
Tiger: Eukarya, Animalia, Chordata, Mammalia, Carnivora, Felidae, Panthera (Panthera tigris)
Freshwater Angelfish: Eukarya, Animalia, Chordata, Actinoptergii, Perciformes, Cichlidae, Pterophyllum (Pterophyllum scalare)
Mitotic division in onion root cells:
- Prophase: the emergence of chromatin threads that form chromosomes, the chromosomes are visible and overlap.
- Metaphase: chromosomes line up and line up in the middle of the equatorial plane. The centromere of the chromosome appears to have bonds with the kinetochores connected to the spindle threads.
- Anaphase: the centromere of the chromosome undergoes division then the chromosomes are pulled by the spindle threads towards the two opposite poles and leave the center of the equator that looks empty.
- Telophase: The cytoplasm divides into two identical-looking daughter cells. At the telophase stage, the process of cell division occurs in two parts and has identical properties.
Mitosis is a cell division through the stages of prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. The purpose of mitosis is for growth and regeneration which results in two daughter cells that are identical to the original parent cell. Mitosis occurs only once and lasts only during somatization.
