Answer:  The  Council  of  Trent  did  away  with  the  sale  of  in dulgences.  It  affirmed  the  long-standing  belief  that  the pope  should  lead  the  Church.  The  Council  of  Trent  also affirmed  that  only  the  Church  had  the  authority  to  judg e the  meaning  of  the  Scriptures.  The  Council  commissioned  a  new  catechism,  or  statement  of  beliefs,  to  summarize  the  teachings  and  rules  of  the  Catholic  Church.  The  Cou ncil  of  Trent  tried  to  bring  bishops  closer  to  their  congregations.  The  Council  set  guidelines  for  schools  t o  educate  priests.  It  encouraged  priests  to  live  modestl y and  care  for  the  poor.
