Rutherford’s used Alpha particles that bear a positive charge and 'shot' them like bullets at the gold film.

Explanation:

Alpha particles, which are helium atoms without electrons (hence He²⁺), when accelerated towards a gold foil by Rutherford, the particles deflected back sharply away from the foil. This is because the positive alpha particles were being repelled. It was later discovered that this is because the gold atoms (and basically a general characteristic of all atoms) have a dense central region of that bore a positive charge. The nucleus is composed of positive particles called protons. Its also has neutrons but these particles have no charge). Remember that like charges repel.
