Which statements describe density? Check all that apply. Density is a chemical property of an object. The density of an object i

s constant. Density is a derived unit of measure. Density is the sum of the mass and volume of an object. The density of an object determines whether it will sink or float.

The only statement on the options that says true about density is:
> The density of an object determines whether it will sink or float.

Why?
Density is a physical property of an object.
Density is not derived as a unit of measure. It is derived from 2 fundamental units: kg and m.
The Density of an object is not constant.
Density is calculated by dividing the mass by the volume of an object.

The correct answer to the question is - the density of an object determines whether it will sink or float.

EXPLANATION:

The density of a substance is defined as mass per unit volume.

Let us consider a body whose mass is m and volume v.

Hence, density of a substance is written as -

                               density d=\frac{m}{v}.

Hence, density is a derived quantity as it is obtained from mass and volume. But, it is not a derived unit. So, it is not a derived unit of measure.

Density of a substance is a physical intensive property. It can not be considered as an chemical property.We can measure the density of a  substance without changing of its chemical composition or identities.

The density of a substance is independent of mass and size of the object. But, it is not a constant quantity. For solids, the density of a substance may be constant as atoms are closely bound to each other. But for gases and liquids, the density is not constant. It is dependent on temperature and other parametres.

Density of a substance gives the idea whether the substance will sink or float. If the density of a substance is more as compared to the liquid, then it will sink. Otherwise it will float.

the book has a mass of 2.5 kg. What net force must act on the book to mak it accelerate to the left at a rate of 7.0m/s2?
Reil [10]

Answer:

17.5 N

Explanation:

<h2>Given :</h2>

  • Mass (m) = 2.5 kg
  • Acceleration (a) = 7.0 m/s²

<h2>To calculate :</h2>

  • Force exerted (F)

<h2>Calculation :</h2>

<h3>• F = ma</h3>

→ F = (2.5 × 7.0) N

→ F = 25/10 × 7 N

→ F = 5/2 × 7 N

→ F = (5 × 7)/2 N

→ F = 35/2 N

→ <u>F</u><u> </u><u>=</u><u> </u><u>1</u><u>7</u><u>.</u><u>5</u><u> </u><u>N</u><u> </u><u>towards</u><u> </u><u>left</u>

Hence, 17.5 N of net force must act on the book to make it accelerate to the left.

Charge q is 1 unit of distance away from the source charge S. Charge p is two times further away. The force exerted between S an
insens350 [35]

Answer : The correct option is, (d) 4 times

Solution :

According to the Coulomb's law, the electrostatic force of attraction or repulsion between two charges is directly proportional to the product of the charges and is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the the charges.

Formula used :

F=k_e\frac{q_1q_2}{r^2}

where,

F = electrostatic force of attraction or repulsion

k_e = Coulomb's constant

q_1 and q_2 are the charges

r = distance between two charges

First we have to calculate the force exerted between S and q when the distance between the charge is 1 unit and let us assumed that the charge be 'q'

F_{sq}=k_e\frac{qq}{1^2}=k_e\times q^2       ..........(1)

Now we have to calculate the force exerted between S and p when the distance between the charge is 2 unit at the same charge.

F_{sp}=k_e\frac{qq}{2^2}=k_e\frac{q^2}{4}     ...........(2)

Equation equation 1 and 2, we get

\frac{F_{sq}}{F_{sp}}=\frac{1}{4}

F_{sq}=4\times F_{sp}

Therefore, the force exerted between S and q is 4 times the force exerted between S and p.

A lamp hangs vertically from a cord in a descending elevator that decelerates at 1.7 m/s2. (a) if the tension in the cord is 63
zubka84 [21]

(a)
The formula is:
∑ F = Weight + T = mass * acceleration

as the elevator and lamp are moving downward, I choose downward forces to be positive.
Weight is pulling down = +(9.8 * mass)
Tension is pulling up, so T = -63
Acceleration is upward = -1.7 m/s^2

(9.8 * mass) + -63 = mass * -1.7
Add +63 to both sides
Add (mass * 1.7) to both sides

(9.8 * mass) + (mass * 1.7) = 63
11.5 * mass = 63

mass = 63 / 11.5

Mass = 5.48 kg

(b)
Since the elevator and lamp are going upward, I choose upward forces to be positive.
Weight is pulling down = -(9.8 * 5.48) = -53.70
Acceleration is upward, so acceleration = +1.7

-53.70 + T = 5.48 * 1.7

T = 53.70 + 9.316 = approx 63 N

The Tension is still the same - 63 N since the same mass, 5.48 kg, is being accelerated upward at the same rate of 1.7 m/s^2
