The Opium Wars forced China to expand ports for trade. Following the first Opium War, which ended in 1842, five new Chinese treaty ports at Guangzhou (Canton), Shanghai, Xiamen (Amoy), Ningbo, and Fuzhou, where British merchants and their families could reside were opened. <span>A huge indemnity (compensation) was to be paid to the British government and merchants also follwoing the first War. F</span>ollowing the second War(1856–1860) <span>11 more treaty ports were opened.

At the end of the second War </span><span>the British and French captured Beijing.</span>

The Opium Wars were two wars that occurred in the 19th century between the Chinese and British empires. The First lasted between 1839 and 1842. The Second broke out in 1856 and lasted until 1860. Its causes were the commercial interests created by the British contraband of opium in India and China, and the efforts of the Chinese government to impose its laws on that trade.

The Chinese defeat in the two wars forced the government to tolerate the opium trade. The British coerced the Chinese to sign the Unequal Treaties, opening several ports to foreign trade and annexing Hong Kong. In addition, the Chinese were forced to pay a compensation to the United Kingdom for 700,000 pounds of silver.

<em>1.-</em> The Han Dynasty was one of the longest dynasties in China(206 BC-220 AD). Its <em>labour system</em> was based in industry and trade, especially mint and silk. Furthermore, advancing iron tools facilitated the work system and they also created weapons.

One key component of the labour system in the Han Dynasty was that they forced the peasants to give up their surpluses as a tributary taxes.

<em>2.</em>- In the Han Dynasty, m<u>en was the ruler of the family</u> and had total control over their wives. Basically, in the genders roles, women was a servant to the husband and give birth to children. Even more, the husband could remarry if the first wife was not able to give birth.

There was a limited possibility for the women to receive education. Just the basic one to raise children.

3.- <u>Cammels and horses</u> were used as means of transportation, basically in the Silk Road. In that era, China traded silk, mint, porcelain and other spices.

That corridor was a very important path for trading with Europe and Asia. In ancient China, before the existence of money, the currency used were goods through barter.
