Cotton was grown in the the southern colonies because they had dense and nutrient rich soil as well as mild temperatures, which makes for a perfect growing opportunity. The southern colonies also had lots of slaves so it helped that they had more "workers" than other places to get the job done quicker.

The reason that plantations sprang up in the South was due to the geography and climate of the Southern colonies areas. Tobacco, rice, cotton, sugar cane and indigo were valuable plants and grown as cash crops.
