When supporting patients who might be uncomfortable with having their skin examined, the main priority is to respect the patient

’s wishes and try to accommodate any needs they may have. As the medical assistant, you can demonstrate professionalism by showing empathy, using calm words, and making sure that the patient feels as comfortable as possible. In many cultures modesty is very important, as a medical assistant it is very important that you are always remembering and respecting each patients culture and ask questions such as if they will need anything regarding special draping and who needs to be present during the examination. The medical assistant should ensure plenty of sheets are available for draping the patient and make sure that only the area being examined can be seen. Other ways the medical assistant can demonstrate professionalism is by making sure the exam room door is completely closed and never let anyone else enter the exam room unless the patient is completely covered. Remembering to be respectful of the patients’ rights and need for modesty, or any other concerns and never being judgmental and always say and show professionalism especially when saying anything making sure to never embarrass the patient. Following your facility’s protocols regarding assisting the physician during a skin examination is also a very crucial step for a medical assistant.
