Although Britain eventually achieved victory over France and its allies, victory had come at great cost. A staggering war debt influenced many British policies over the next decade. Attempts to raise money by reforming colonial administration, enforcing tax laws, and placing troops in America led directly to conflict with colonists. New England is rocky with many coastlines including both ocean, river, and lake waters. Fishing became very important to the coastal areas in addition to shipbuilding industries. Away from the coast, small family farms provided food for the area and supported the merchant trading system in the cities.
