In ecology, decomposers are organisms such as fungi or bacteria that obtain energy, nutrients, etc. from dead or decaying organisms including plants and animals. Due to this, decomposers play an important role in food chains as they feed on consumers and producers once they die returning nutrients to the soil that can be used by other organism and levels in food chains which preserves the natural balance. Therefore, it is true decomposers consume nonliving organic matter as they feed on dead organisms which are nonliving organic matter.
