George Washington is known as the Father of our Nation for a few reasons.
The first is that he was the General in charge of the Revolutionary Army that won the nation's independence from Great Britain.
But he was also the first President and set the standard for how a President should comport themselves in office. He also notably retired after two terms, which was very important for the day.
The term spoils referred to the political appointments, such as cabinet offices or ambassadorships, controlled by an elected official. In addition to designating the awarding of public offices to party supporters, the term has come to refer to other abuses of political power designed to benefit and enrich the ruling party.
