The answer is social control.  This is especially true when we want to ensure law and order in our society.  There are rules that are kept to prevent any kind of trouble.  It does not suppress a person’s freedom rather it protects individual freedom.

In other word, social control many ways by which our behavior, appearance and thoughts are control or regulated by laws, rule, norms and structure in a particular society.

In society today, social control is seen as an important part of social order. It is very necessary in the society as it brings about orderliness.

In fact, a society without social control is a lawless society, when there are no laid down rules, social order enforcement that defines daily life, such society would be in chaos and confusion.

Continued process of socialization is the important ways by which social control is produced in a society. The ongoing process of socialization brought the norms, behavior, rules, and interactional expectations that are general in the family, peer pressure, community and the larger society.

Socialization guides individual, it teaches how to think, how to behave in a way that is socially accepted in a particular society. How an organization is physically organized is also a component of social control. An example is traffic signal controls, paved street etc.  

Society punishes any individual that fails to adhere to rules, norms and social expectations. These punishments can be in different forms.
