The main message of the film of “12 Years a Slave” is the cruelty of slavery as an institution. The director Steve Mc Queen´s portrayal of mistreatment forces audiences to confront it in long uninterrupted scenes that force us to feel the full impact of human cruelty. Rather than explaining things overtly through dialogue, the characters’ behavior tell us of the the subservience to survive slaves had to endure.

The significance of this is that, it encourages the integration of the offender into the socety inorder to contribute in the growth of the community rather than going back to the life of crime.

On the otherhand, it helps the society towards drastic reduction of the number of people incarcerated in prisons thereby promoting the rehabilitation and bahavioural corrections for which the prison is meant for.
