The Inquisition is one of the most important methods the Catholic Church used to try to contain the spread of Protestantism. Although its aim was to combat heresy, by heresy the Catholic Church meant everything that wasn't Catholicism. This is why many non-Catholics were questioned, but ultimately either converted to Catholicism or killed massively.
