Write and solve an equation for each situation.

Mathematics

Answer:

Peter 8 and Alice 10 home runs.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the home runs by peter be represented by "x" and the home runs of Alice be represented by "y".

Altogether the hit 18 home runs. This means sum of x and y would be 18. So we can write the equation as:

x + y = 18                                      Equation 1

Peter hit twice the difference of the  number of home runs Alice hit and 6. Difference of the  number of home runs Alice hit and 6 is y - 6 and twice of this difference would be 2(y - 6). So, we can set up the second equation as:

x = 2(y - 6)                                     Equation 2

Substituting the value of x from Equation 2 into Equation 1, we get:

2(y - 6) + y = 18

2y - 12 + y = 18

3y = 30

y = 10

Substituting the value of y in Equation 2, we get:

x = 2(y - 6) = 2(10 - 6) = 2(4) = 8

This means, Peter hit 8 home runs and Alice hit 10 home runs.

In your own words, explain to me what is absolute value? Make sure to talk about the definition of it, how you find it, and how
Tom [10]

Answer:

It's a function that associates a real number x with a positive real number using the flowing definition: If the number is not negative (so either positive or 0) the absolute value is x. If x is negative, the absolute value is -x.

This means that to find the absolute value of x you must first determine if x is negative or not, and if it is, multiply it by -1. If it isn't, leave it as it is.

Since the absolute value is a function (of a given number), you can't just plot that number in the number line but the function (so in this case absolute value must be taken first.

The absolute value of x is never negative, so given the absolute value of x we can't determinate if x was positive or negative (if x =/ 0) before the absolute value was taken.

A 6.5 meter long rope is cut into two pieces one piece is twice as long as other find the land of the long piece
Alex Ar [27]

Answer:

4.333 meters

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

We are told that the rope is cut into two pieces and that one (longer) piece is twice the length of the other (short) piece

let the length of the short piece  =  x meters

hence the length of the longer piece = 2x meters

we are also given that the total length of the two pieces is 6.5m

hence,

length of short piece + length of long piece = 6.5 m

in equation form:

x + 2x = 6.5

3x = 6.5  (divide both sides by 3)

x = 6.5/3 meters

we are asked to find the length of the long piece (i.e 2x)

hence

2x = 2 (6.5/3) = 4.333 meters (answer)
