The additive inverse are basically opposite numbers. When u add a number to its additive inverse, it equals 0. Example : -5 and 5.....2 and -2......4 and -4....etc.

A hot air balloon ascends 2000 ft from the ground and then descends 2000 ft.........2000 - 2000 = 0

Noa hiked 2 mi up a mountain trail and then hiked 2 mi down the trail....2 - 2 = 0

The pattern:
So it goes, 1, 2, 3, as the first number in each equation right.
Then it goes 4,5,6 as the second number in each equation.

The sum or 3rd number is a zig zag pattern from the first and second numbers as shown below.
